Robert Gideon

Originally from the east coast, Robert has called Los Angeles home for the past 10 years. He is an engineer by training and an avid photographer in his free time. He first learned how to work a camera on his dad’s Exakta Varex IIa back in the 1980’s, shooting black and white negatives and developing them in his high school dark room. For the past 5 years, he lived in the Downtown Los Angeles area and has walked the streets at night for exercise and to clear his head. His photographic work is a sample of the snapshots taken during these rambles, and forms a diary of his life as an observer in Downtown LA. Some of his work has been on display in the DTLA Emerging Art gallery in Downtown Los Angeles, as well as the Larson Gallery in Yakima, WA. Three of his photos have been shortlisted for the Motif Collective Award and he also received an Honorable Mention for the 13th annual MPA awards. He has had invited work in multiple shows at Covet Gallery in Oceanside, and the SCAA Gallery in Santa Clarita and has had work in group shows at Praxis in Minneapolis, FotoFoto Gallery in Huntington NY, D’art gallery in Norwalk, VA, and Modern Visual Arts gallery in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Seven of his photos were donated to the Oceanside Museum of Art Teeny-Tiny Art Mart 2024 online auction in support of the museum’s community outreach for art-based education initiatives.

Exhibition Description

As an artist, Robert loves the drama of black and white photography. He finds the dreamy world of light and shadow that he can find all around LA, reminiscent of Film Noir. His variety in this exhibition shows his view on the world, singling out moments, items, and places in ways that most can take for granted. In that way, he elevates them and allows the viewers to share in the moment and, of course, the drama.
