Josh Martin
My name is Josh Martin. I'm an LA native, artist and live music fanatic.
I grew up around music and art, and fortunately, both remain major parts of my life to this day.
Since August 2023, I have been combining my childhood penchant for art with my more recent passion for live music photography, to create striking two-toned portraits of famous musicians, including many of my personal favorites. Almost all of the portraits to date have been based on photos from my own archive, with a select number graciously offered up by my photographer friends.
Exhibition Description
The Charcoal Club is an ever-expanding exhibition of portraits featuring famous and beloved musicians, photographed and illustrated by Josh Martin. Each portrait is hand-drawn using white charcoal pencil on black paper, with an original photo from Josh's live music archive as the basis.
From superstars like Gwen Stefani and Mark Hoppus, to late legends like Phil Lesh and Taylor Hawkins, to indie icons like Tame Impala, Thundercat and boygenius, The Charcoal Club is a celebration of live music, and the power and raw emotion that comes from bringing true instrumental artistry to the masses.
