Drok Grant

"Drok Grant (b. 1996, New Jersey) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice began in music and expanded into painting in 2023. A former college football player, Grant brings the discipline and storytelling instinct of an athlete into his art, working primarily with bold color and a whimsical, narrative-driven eye. His paintings often resist traditional notions of beauty, instead exploring memory, experience, and imagination through vibrant compositions. Self-taught and rooted in community, Grant was encouraged by fellow painters in Los Angeles to take his work seriously, leading him to curate and host his first four shows independently. Influenced by Henry Taylor, Ernie Barnes, and Jacob Lawrence, he sees painting as a way to tell stories that reflect both personal journeys and collective histories."

Exhibition Description

Grant, who comes from a mixed but predominantly Black household, approaches painting with the same passion that once drove his athletic career—an obsession that began on a whim during a trip and quickly grew into an unstoppable pursuit across canvases large and small.
