Camille Sierra White
I am a UCLA (‘26) graduate in Chemistry/Urban Planning. A Brooklyn native, I am nomadic at the moment as I figure out what's next - a lover of long walks, poetry, city living without a car, and cats. I worked with FAST, a student fashion club, collaborating with student models, stylists on editorial shoots. I shoot the juxtapositions and details (tiny or dramatic) that I spy wandering around the city or on a project. Reflections glistening through sculpted spikes in a classmate's hair; a home on wheels and luxury vehicle in one parking lot; a smile unapologetically tucked under cat-eye glasses. I dial exposure/colors, blurring the line between a subject (human or not) and their environment.
Exhibition Description
I explored how materials and spaces can hold fierce, unapologetic personalities, from classmates I worked alongside both in front of and behind the camera through UCLA's fashion club FAST, to strangers. In LA's drag community, I found this at the intersection of kitsch and camp with second-hand fashion and recycled materials as sites of radical queer self-expression. Elsewhere, I photographed the glamorous curation of high fashion against everyday scrap materials (e.g. used tea bags, newspaper, bottle caps). In both, "trash" transforms into resistance. Across other works, this hopefully carries into quieter moments, such as a stranger's small act of defiance against their surroundings.
